A ski resort with terrain for all levels and closeby lodging, lots of apres ski activities and a good ski school make for great vacations on snow.
The province of Bergamo is set in the Lombardy region of Italy. The northern part of the province is made up of the Orobian Alps with Mount Coca (3052 metres) as its highest peak. The capital of the region - the city of Bergamo - sits at the foothills of the Alps, which begin immediately north of the town.
The Bergamo Ski Area (1000-2300 metres) offers a combined total of 69 pistes (28 blue, 29 red, and 12 black). It is made up of the linked ski resorts of Castione della Presolana, Colere, Foppolo, Monte Pora, and Schilpario. Each ski resort has a local ski area as well as access to the whole Bergamo Ski Area.
Colere (1050 metres) is one of the most attractive resorts in the Bergamo region. It has 25 kilometres of local pistes with a maximum vertical of 1200 metres. The resort is well suited to intermediate skiers (three blue runs, two red, and two black). It is also known for its good technical runs and has hosted high level competitions. The resort centre is a typical mountain village lined with traditional bars, shops, and charming restaurants.
Monte Pora (1350 metres) is surrounded by lush green hills and woodland. It is known for its good technical runs and is popular with intermediates and advanced skiers. The resort offers seven blue runs, 11 red, and one black. The wide runs are suitable for competitions and have hosted ski races at international level. The village centre offers plenty of amenities, including restaurants, pizzerias, shops, and two ski schools.
The resort of Foppolo (1600 metres) has 10 blue runs, five red, and six black as well as two kilometres of cross-country trails. The high-altitude resort has an excellent snow record so skiing or boarding back to the resort is often possible.
The tiny resort of Schilpario (1134 metres) has just two lifts and two local pistes. The resort's pistes are suitable for beginners, but more advanced skiers can head over to neighbouring resorts in the Bergamo ski area. Schilpario also offers 20 kilometres of cross-country trails.
Castione della Presolana (1300 metres) has 15 kilometres of local pistes well suited to all levels (15 blue runs, 22 red, and four black). Skiers can reach an altitude of 1700 metres.
Six airports surround Bergamo's ski area; the nearest is Bergamo itself - an hour's drive from the slopes.
