Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is home to the iconic Matterhorn and offers some of the best snow conditions in the Swiss Alps during October. Its high altitude and extensive, varied ski area make it a favourite for early-season skiing. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is known for being the highest cable car station in Europe. From the observation deck, take in the panoramic views over the Swiss and Italian Alps, including the iconic Matterhorn peak. There are also several restaurants and cafes at the summit. The Glacier Palace is also located within the glacier and features ice sculptures and even an ice slide! Geneva or Zurich are the closest airports for Zermatt.

Sölden, Austria

Sölden is another popular choice for early-season skiing in October. Located in the Ötztal valley of Tyrol, Austria. It is known for its reliable snow conditions and extensive skiing on the Rettenback and Tiefenbach glaciers. Sölden also hosts international skiing events, including the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. Non-skiing activities include snowshoeing, ice skating and tobogganing.

Ruka, Finland

Ruka is one of Finland’s most popular ski resorts. Located in the Lapland region, Ruka has a variety of slopes suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all levels – beginners to experts. The ski resort offers well-groomed pistes, snow parks, and off-piste areas for more adventurous skiers. It is also renowned for its extensive network of cross-country ski trails. The region boasts over 500 kilometers of tracks. Non-skiing activities include snowmobiling, husky sledding and reindeer sleigh rides. Ruka has a variety of accommodation options, including hotels, cabins, and apartments. The resort also has restaurants, cafes, and shops. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The nearest international airport is Helsinki.

Passo Stelvio, Italy

Passo Stelvio is a high-altitude ski area in the Ortler Alps of Italy. It is located near the Swiss border and offers stunning alpine views. Passo Stelvio opens in October each year and has some of the most reliable snow conditions. The high-altitude skiing has terrain suitable for all levels. Surrounding towns and villages offer plenty of accommodation. Many skiers stay in Bormio which is well kitted out with amenities. Non-skiing activities in Passo Stelvio includes snowshoeing, ice skating, and tobogganing.
